Garage Door Parts: Insulation

April 6th, 2009

When it comes to garage door opener parts we often talk about repairing a problem more than preventing a problem.  The key to a nice and cozy garage is maintinance and making it more efficient.  Hopefully by reading this article you can save some money from your heating bill.

Your garage takes up a lot of heat in your house.  Anyone who owns one will tell you right off the bat that they take forever to get warm.  And its your garage where you could be loosing a lot of heat in your house.  The DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy states that the most leakage (31%) occurs through the walls, floors, ceilings, and air ducks (15%).  Your garage was most likely not built with premium insulation.  Talk about an energy hog!

As far as your garage goes I am a firm believer that the topic of insulation is a very important topic.  This is really important for me personally because have a huge garage that I have to heat and I do that via a waste oil boiler that I purchased three years ago that I fuel with the oil from my oil change business.  We have long winters where I live so I want to have the most minimal amount of heat leakage as humanly possible so I do not run out of oil (we don’t do a lot of oil changes during the winter).

Okay so hot air rises and where does it go?  The building envelope: the roof, walls, doors, and windows that enclose your garage.  You need to make sure that those components are airtight to make it energy efficient.  You want to close as many holes as possible.  The need to build or get built shafts made from plywood and foam weatherstripping  and plug the holes with them.  You can also use the spray foam.  That’s what I did.  I used urethane.  Stuff is excellent.  I spray foamed my whole attic above the garage.  I can heat it now with minimum heat even at cold temperatures.

You have to uncover all the hidden holes in your garage.  There are most likey more than you think. You can plus small holes with fire barrier sealant.  Remember to seal all the holes in your ducks.

I’m seeking definite answers. That’s a habit of mine. Do you think this would only work with garage door opener parts?. Do you really think this is so?.

Garage Door Parts Helpful Experience

I have to replace parts for my garage door opener all the time from heavy use.

I was speaking with a friend of  mine of he was relating to me how it was interesting I made this website because he could have used come installation and troubleshooting tips a week ago.  Apparently his kids were hanging on the garage door, I don’t know why, and one of the garage springs broke,  I beleive it may be called a torsion spring.  Anyway it broke and from what he told me those are hard parts to get.  You can go online and get them but getting the right one that will fit for your garage door can be difficult.

Torsion springs come a variety of standardized sizes, so you have to carefully measure the old springs to know what to order for proper replacements.  He went to Home Depot I think and got his but those darn things were expensive.  Also on a side note and this should not come as any surprise but make sure you measure the spring when it is relaxed and not stretched.  Please.  If you do not you will purchase a size way too big for your door.  There is an excellent article I found about installing torsion springs if you need it.

Anyway, that’s not what I really wanted to talk about.  I wanted to talk about garage door remotes today.  The reason for this is because several days ago this happened to my brother.  He calls me up for advice because his remote will not work for his garage.  The first thing I ask him of course is if the batteries are working.  This is the number reason why that little gadget will fail.  Don’t have to be a genius to figure that out.  So yes, the batteries are good.  Second, I told him that the switches might have to be replaced or realigned.  They were fine as the remote was not very old.  It turned out that the darn thing just needed to be re-programmed.  Sometimes, and I don’t know why, the remotes looses the connection with the actual garage door.  Alot of the remotes have a button on the back that you have to push and hold for several seconds.  You will hear a “beep” when it is done.  The light will flash as well.  Then you hit the main button on your remote and voila.  The program is confirmed and you are done.

I did some research and if you have a Sears Craftman garage door remote then it can be a little different.  With the door closed you need to push and hold the main button.  Then you need to hold the light button on the door control.  Push and hold that.  After the opener light flashes test it.  It should work.

Garage doors can be tricky.  Especially the Stanley one.  Good thing they do not make those anymore.  Anyway I have found out that if I go to Yahoo Answers they have a bunch of answers to hard questions you may have.  Exploit that resource.  Hope this helped

Garage Door Parts Knowledge

My friend’s son just ran into his garage door.  It wasn’t watching what he was doing I guess. He backed his VW Jetta in the door before it was through opening.  Needless to say he is going to have to get a new door for his garage.

He is probably just going to call Overland Door.  Like I said in a previous post they are in every city you can imagine.  Stanly garage door used to be around but I do not know what happened to it.  They just disappeared.  Maybe they couldn’t compete.  I don’t know.

He was pricing garage doors the other day.  He is going to spend at least $1000 on one if its going to be quality.  I told him that since he was going to have to get a new door he might as well make it a custom garage door.  The one I am talking about looks like the garage door in the picture when it is not one door but two and the swing open instead of coming down on a chain.

Speaking of garage door opener parts I am still waiting for most of you all to get back to me about the poll I asked on which brand was the best.  I have gotten some e-mails but not many.  Do you like Stanly?  Do you like Overhead?  Do you like Genie?  This is what I am trying to figure out.

Many of you have wasted space in your garage.  You can make it like a bar, a sports lounge or whatever.  Whoever said a garage had to be boring.  If you have one car you can have your car on one side and then on the other have a mini bar with a television.  Its a dream come true.  You can have a HD TV sitting up there and go out into the garage to watch the game.

There are so many garage door opener parts you can buy for your place. Choose wisely.  Do not go for the universal parts.  They will not work as advertised.  Get the exact parts and fittings you need from them.
